Gail Davis Sings

Gail Davis originally wanted to be in musical comedies, but since she could not sing or dance that well, she wasn't really suited for that particular line of work.  But after she found success in Westerns, she recorded several albums/singles for RCA Victor and Little Golden Records.
What do you think of Gail's voice?

Here's a partial list of songs Gail recorded:

      "Annie Oakley"
"Shake Me, I Rattle (Squeeze Me I Cry)"
      "Blue Tail the Red Fox"
      "Pierre and Bernadette"
      "Tomboy"
      "Why Not Save Sunshine?"
      "Into the Eyes of Texas"
      "Poor Little Heart"
      "Come Back to Me"
      "Are You Ready?"
      "Wabash Cannonball"

Regular Shows:

The Range Rider (December 1950 - June 1953, 78 episodes)

Starring Jock Mahoney as the otherwise nameless Range Rider, with Dick Jones as "Dick West," his young sidekick, The Range Rider was a children's Western series produced by Gene Autry's "Flying A Productions."
What sets this show apart from the other kiddie Westerns of its day are the stunts; Mahoney and Jones were both outstanding athletic stuntmen.  They filled the shows with enough fights, flips, and gags, to make up for the abundance of stock footage in the programs, and delight viewers of all ages.

Range Rider on DVD:

Volumes 1 - 5 from Alpha Home Video (20 episodes)

Yancy Derringer (October 1958 - June 1959, 34 episodes)

Despite being short lived, Yancy Derringer was popular with its audience and cast members alike.  Jock Mahoney again plays the title character -- a refined New Orleans gentleman who carries a derringer in his pocket or hat, and a sword in his cane.
X Brands plays his mute Indian compainion, Pahoo Ka Ta Wah, and Francis Bergen plays his most regular love interest -- most regular -- he had no lack of female friends.      Yancy is a secret agent working for the Federal City Administrator, John Colton, which basically makes him a troubleshooter for the whole city of New Orleans.

Stories of the Century (Jan. 1954 - Mar. 1955, 39 episodes)

Featuring Jim Davis as "Matt Clark, Railroad Detective," Stories of the Century was fairly successful, even earning the Primetime Emmy Award for Best Western or Adventure Series in 1955.
It used stories about real life outlaws, such as Jesse James, the Younger Brothers, Belle Starr, etc., and dramatized them.
In Season One -- the first 26 episodes -- Mary Castle co-starred as detective Frankie Adams.  For Season Two, producers decided a change (perhaps due to Castle's alcoholism, or perhaps just for the sake of change) was in order, and Kristine Miller replaced "Frankie" with Margaret "Jonesy" Jones for the last 13 episodes.
The show was cancelled to make room for another program (The Adventures of Dr. Fu Manchu) which only ran 13 episodes.

The Lone Ranger (Sept. 1949 - Sept. 1957, 221 episodes)

A firey horse with the speed of a light, a cloud of dust, and a hearty Hi-Yo Silver!  The Lone Ranger.

Television still was in its young years when The Lone Ranger first aired in 1949. Clayton Moore was choosen for the role of the Ranger, and Jay Silverheels was choosen for the role of his faithful Indian companion, Tonto.
Although the show ran for eight years, it is usually counted up as five seasons.
Seasons One and Two -- 78 episodes altogether -- are about the same as far as script and directing go, and these seasons contain some of the most commonly-watched episodes.
Season Three (51 episodes) brought change; a man named John Hart replaced Moore's role as the Ranger, and sets and scripts were done slightly different.  But John Hart didn't last long, and Clayton Moore soon returned.
Season Four welcomed the "real" Ranger back.  Also, the rights to the Lone Ranger sold (for $3,000,000) and production was now under Jack Wrather.
Season Five grew more elaborate, now being filmed in color, with more location shots and less studio sets.

Regular Shows:

Annie Oakley (Jan. 1954 - Feb. 1957, 81 episodes)

Annie Oakley was a landmark series in that it was the first Western television show to star a woman; the popularity of the show made Gail Davis a star, but after the show ended, she found herself typecast her as a "good girl," and never did much more acting.
Although Annie was undoubtebly the star of the show, Brad Johnson and Jimmy Hawkins co-starred as deputy Lofty Craig, and Annie's little brother Tagg, respectively.  Annie specialized in the brainwork, Lofty in the legwork, and Tagg provided comedic entertainment (as well as being the centerpiece to many plots).

Frontier Doctor (Sept. 1958 - Jun. 1959, 39 episodes)

Rex Allen went from starring in children-oriented Westerns on the big screen, to starring in adult-oriented Westerns on the small screen.
Rex's character was Dr. Bill Baxter, who administered medical relief (and candy jaw breakers -- "the best thing for expectant fathers") to those living on the frontier in the first decade of the 20th century.  Doc Baxter could do his fair share of detective work, too, when a medical case turned into a criminal case -- which was just nearly every week.

Regular shows:

Cheyenne (Sept. 1955 - Dec. 1963, 109 episodes)

Clint Walker's most famous role is arguably that of Cheyenne Bodie, one week a sheriff, the next week, a scout, the next . . . ?  Cheyenne was not a "continuing" show, but featured Cheyenne in different roles, and different eras of the Old West.
Around 1958, Clint Walker left the show for a while over a contract dispute, and Cheyenne would sometimes alternate with other Warner Brothers shows (such as Bronco and Sugarfoot), adding to a hodge-podge schedule.
L.Q. Jones co-starred as sidekick "Smitty" in the first season, but left after that, because after all . . . Cheyenne is a "lonely man."
