Novels

Even after the movie was over, or the television set turned off for the night, you could sneak back into your room or go climb a tree someplace and enjoy your favorite Western character in a different way; through a novel.

A book allows you to be involved in the story in a different way. Sometimes, the stories vary a little from what you're used to seeing on the screen (but they romanticize the hero or heroine just as much, if not more), and sometimes the books actually came before the film.

This is true for The Lone Ranger novels. The first one (The Lone Ranger) was published in 1936, after the radio show first aired in 1933, and many years before The Lone Ranger would air on TV in 1949. Fran Striker wrote the novels, and was involved in both the radio and TV shows. A couple of the books -- The Lone Ranger and The Lone Ranger and Mystery Ranch -- were written for adults rather than younger people.

"Hopalong Cassidy" was first in novels, and then in movies and radio shows and television shows, and the character Clarence E. Mulford originally wrote about bears little resemblance to the other "Hoppies."  Mulford's Hoppy was not the polished, clean-cut man that Bill Boyd brought to the screen, and the novels had a strong vein of realism running through them that was eventually lost.

Whitman Publishing Company published many Authorized TV Editions, including stories about Clint Walker's "Cheyenne," Gail Davis' "Annie Oakley," and Nick Adam's "Johnny Yuma (The Rebel)." See list below.

(Note: this is a working page, and I will be updating and modifying it from time to time.)

Regular Shows

Wagon Train (Sept. 1957 - May, 1965, 284 episodes)

Wagon Train, one of the most popular Western TV shows of all time, had considerable change the cast and show format over the years, but remained essentially the same throughout all eight seasons; the story would always center around the characters traveling (sometimes more, sometimes less on the series' regulars) on a wagon train, being forced to fight man and nature as they do so.
Frank McGrath and Terry Wilson were the only ones who were with the show throughout its entire run.
Ward Bond played the wagon master for the first four seasons, then after his death on November 5, 1960, John McIntire became the new wagon master.
Scouts were played by Robert Horton (seasons one to five), Denny Scott Miller (season five to seven), and Robert Fuller (seasons seven and eight).
Young Michael Burns played Barnaby West for seasons four to eight.

Wagon Train on DVD:
Season One
Season Two
Seson Three (currently unavailable)
Season Four
Season Five
Season Six
Season Seven
Season Eight

Tammy (Sept. 1965 - Mar. 1966, 26 episodes)

Tammy was a take-off of several "Tammy" movies made in the late fifties. The show centered on Tammy Tarleton (Debbie Watson), an eighteen year-old girl who moves back and forth between her hillbilly family living on a bayou houseboat, and the wealthy Brent family, who own a plantation and pancake business.
Co-stars were:
Denver Pyle
Frank McGrath
Donald Woods
Dorothy Green

The entire Tammy series is availible from Classic DVD World.
